Those who have read our previous observations on the true character of Geometry, as set forth, applied, and illustrated, in the work called Euclid sE lements of Geometry, will apprehend at once the purpose of the earlier and more important of the definitions which precede the propositions contained in the present volume. For the benefit of readers who have not read, or may not remember, those observations, we will here very briefly re-state the argument propounded in them; namely, that Euclid sE lements constitutes an arranged system of inductive reasoning, applied to, and illustrated by its application to, the subjects of the departmental science ofF ormand Magnitude. The great characteristic of the system (and in this becomes apparent its harmony and close alliance with the modern inductive system known as theB aconian) is, that it is strictly based upon fact. The fundamental doctrine, primarily inculcated as imperative, and prominently exemplified throughout Euclid swork, is that certainty can be obtained as the result of reasoning only when that reasoning starts from and rests upon the truth of fact and reality as its basis.
